Ok, I give a try with following list for a windows p2v:
- The function of business services on the physical server (example: DNS, DHCP) should be prepared to be bypassed by other servers. This avoids downtime for the end users.
- write down the TCPIP configuration, MAC address of the physical server
- remember the local admin password (just for any cases)
- Coldclone the physical server without starting the newly created VM.
- Change the settings to boot the VM without network connection.
- Delete unsupported and unnecessary devices from the VM configuration settings (example: USB, COM if not needed, etc.)
- Start the VM
- Install VMware Tools
- Set screen size and color depth (and hardware acceleration)
- Delete hidden devices (on CMD: DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1, devmgmt.msc. Select in the view menu "show hidden devices".)
- Configure the vmware nic: TCPIP configuration (if needed: with the MAC address of the physical server)
- Deinstall not neccessary services and application, for instance: storage mgmt services, Grafic card-Addons, HP Mgmt Agent, etc.
- Restart your VM
- Check the event log if there are any problems or warnings (neglect network based warnings)
- Point of no return: Don't use your old physical server anymore...
- Activate the network
- Reactivate the windows license if needed
- Reboot
- Check the eventlog and other application logs
- Do performance tests
