CentOS 7 Physical Server Being Shown as CentOS 4/5 in ESXi

Hello all,

I have an ESXi 8U2 hypervisor that I am using to convert a physical CentOS 7.9 server. When the VM is spun up and the conversion is ongoing it is showing as CentOS 4/5. Has anyone else run into this? I am running Converter 6.4 build 21710069.

Once the conversion is done the vm will start up properly but should I then change guest OS to CentOS 7?

Thanks,

Steve

You should be able to make that OS version change without any significant impact. It will affect the config file for the VM. So you'll want to restart the VM to verify that it still operates as you expect.

Not sure why it defaulted to CentOS 4/5 though.

Just Power off the VM.
Right Click the VM -> Edit Settings -> VM Options -> General Options -> Guest OS Version.

As already said, this is no big issue, the OS type of the VM just sets some default settings optimised for that OS version. Changing it to 7 later will do no harm, as will importing it with an older version on destination not harm anything 🙂
