Can't P2V my old XP desktop...help!

I've got an old Gateway desktop that I desperately want to P2V into Workstation 7 running on my new Toshiba laptop running Win7. I installed it vCenter Converter standalone onto my Win7 laptop, and cannot seem to get it to recognize the desktop over the network. I've even connected the two machines directly via a crossover cable instead of going wireless, and still can't get to the XP box. What am I doing wrong? Is there some agent I need to install on the XP box?? I would really appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,

Greg

I'll private message you my email address. I have never done the cross over method. Everything I have ever done from Converter has been over our LAN but I wouldn't figure wireless would cause any issues. I would definitley disable all the firwalls so that nothing is blocking traffic.

In additon to the cold boot method you could also try installation of converter stand alone to the XP machine and start the process from there.

I'm going to try this method tonight. I have the Converter Standalone .exe on CD so I install that on the actual box that I want to convert, is that right? See before I installed Converter on the box that housed my Workstation 7 instance.... I guess that's where I went wrong.

Thanks,

I've done it both ways. I typically try to do it from a remote PC but if that fails installing it local has been my fall back.

Can I email you tonight if I have any issues? Is it best to just connect the laptop to the XP machine via crossover cable and then do the conversion? I'm having issues trying to do it via wireless. I'll follow you on twitter and DM you to get your email address. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

if you use any other version then 3.0.3 to p2v XP keep in mind that every later version usually misconfigures the job and the result will not work.

So make sure you do NOT click "keep current adapter" - instead specifically assign the buslogic controller.

Only version 3.0.3 does this correctly

Thanks to everyone who chimed in, it was a success last night, it did take 2.5 hours, but it worked. What a sweet product!
