A little help...

I am not quite sure what I am doing wrong.. I cannot get my converted boxes to boot, or even post in Virtual Server. I am trying to conver a windows 2003 stan to a virtual machine that will run on virtual server. The conversion process seems to go well, I get no errors. But when it comes time to boot the machine.. nada. I cant even hit the bios to change the boot order to allow me to boot from my BartPE iso. Any tips or direction to some good documentation would be nice.

#1. I'll assume you mean VMware Server, not the competition Smiley Wink

#2. More info please? Host OS, VMware Product and version? Log file messages?

Linux Fedora 6 is the host OS, let me get the log files up. I might take me a sec, I got really bogged down.

Okay, I have tried another machine. I still get the same thing. I must be doing something wrong. Anyone feel like outlining the process of converting a physical box to a virtual one using VMconverter? I am using VMWare Server on a Linux host. When I try to boot my converted box nothing happens. It does not even post. If I create a new VM and add the disk from the converted machine, I get a windows hardware error.

Did you let the Converter perform the reconfiguration step? (I'm not sure if you start from the beginning and Image the souce, whether or not Converter automatically continues to the reconfigure step after the imaging step is done).

Well, I went through all the steps in the wizard. I pointed everything at the sysprep files. Hmmm. I really want to be able to do the hot cloning, Stay here all night with a BartPE disk is not what I want to do over the weekend. I am stilll working on it. You didnt see anything usefull in the log?

I am going to try taking the cloned disk from the conversion and booting to a bartpe disk and try injecting the scsi drivers and such. I will see if that allow me to boot the OS. If that works it might just go that path, a little longer but it gets to the same place and allows me to do hot cloning. But if you have any ideas I am willing to test them out, so just let me know. My pefered method will still be the way outlined by VM onverter

Okay, I have got my newly converted machine up and running on VMWare Server. I had to go around the block to cross the street, but I did it. I would really still like to get the VM Converter to work correctly.

Here is what I did.

I used the VM COnverter to "hot clone" the drives of the physical box.

I transfered the images via secureCRT to my fedora box that runs VMWare server.

I created a new VM and added the disks.

I booted from a BartPE ISO and used the FixVMSCSI tools to inject and make the changes to the system.

I still could not boot to windows, but it did post.

So I used to Recovery Console fixboot and fixmbr.

Rebooted and worked like a charm (after tweaking some permissons). My MSSQL and Apache server are running.

I will burn it in for a while and let ya know!!

Okay, I think I got it. I am just waiting for a clone to finish. It was user error. [:
