I've had something similiar like this happen - it would get to 99% and then fail.

I was able to boot the new VM using a BartPE UltimateP2V disc and have it install the BusLogic SCSI drivers. Then the VM booted to windows and I continued with the VMtools installation.

I am having a similar problem: we are trying to import a Windows 2003 server machine and it quickly progresses from 0 to 97% (in a few minutes) and then fails with unknown error. Here are the relevant lines from the physical machine's vmware-converter-1.log file. Can someone help?

I ran into something similar when I was converting from physical directly to ESX. This happend when I had opened (or changed) the configuration on the target esx server before finishing the conversion. When I left the configuration alone the conversion finished successfully

I am having the same problem and have posted the topic "Unknown error returned by VMware Converter Agent". Still waiting for answers and trying some solutions myself too. "tharrold" stated in a reply that this is a compatibility issue between VC2.0 and ESX 3.0 . He has tried with VC2.0 managing ESX 2.0 and everything has gone fine. I think we should wait for VMware to come up with some solution or patch.

Yes, you should avoid touching the new VM until the entire import process is finished.

I am having a similar problem: we are trying to import a Windows 2000 server SP4 machine and it quickly progresses from 5 to 97% then fails with unknown error. I am pasting vmware-converter-1.log file.

I've had the same problem importing several Windows 2000 SP4 machines. Every Windows 2003 Standard and Enterprise OS machines have imported successfully. All of them HOT.

Question for you then....do you install VMware Converter locally to the machine you are trying to import? Or are you successfully importing machines remotely? This is a question for anyone who's had success...

Same as the above poster. I have success both locally and remotely with win2k3 but not win2k sp4

Hello,

Are you trying to use this through a terminal or remote desktop session? Did you install the tool through a terminal or remote desktop session?

If so, reinstall the tool while on the console directly and run the tool directly or through a remote control session such as VNC.

After doing this it worked for me.

Brian

I'm stuck at 95%...first time was via RDP, now via VNC. ugh. I will try again from a WinXP box this weekend and report

tried again with my problem child server (win2ksrvrsp4) to hot copy and it still failed (even with Converter installed on an XP pc). However, just had complete success with using the cold copy method!!

I just read in another post that this issue may be relayted to dynamic disks, and as I checked, my server is actually configured with dynamic disks. Anyone else checked this condition ?

I am not using dynamic disks because the machine I imported is NT 4.0 sp6a. This is crazy though because I just did another import attempt with this box and am now getting this error again. I was already successful with this machine now it fails.

Arrgh.

Hi all,

I'm facing a problem with convert physical HP BL35p with NO SCSI disc on board.

I'm able to convert these servers with VMware Converter 3.0 but when I try to power on virtual machine it do not want to.

so I've solved in this way:

\- add a new virtual disc on the machine

\- boot the machine from a live CD OS (bartPe)

\- recreate the partition as primary on the newly added virtual disc

\- clone the exixting logical partitions to the newly created primary.

\- with diskpart set as active the right partition end then do a fixmbr on that disk

\- reboot and disconnect live CD.

Now all works fine

cheers

Find out another procedure using Acronis:

\- convert the physical machine to virtual

\- boot with Acronis Disc iso image

\- convert the logical partitions on Dynamic disk to Primary partition with Acronis

\- set active

\- reboot disconnecting Acronis

all work fine

cheers

I finally got mine to go. It turned out to be port security on the VLAN that my ESX boxes sit on. We opened 902 both ways and we finally got past the 97% failure.

Hi,

I think I was able to find the solution when my conversion failed at 99%. The failure can be caused by different reasons. At 97% - 99% range, it means you're in "Customization/Reconfig" phase, and actual data transfer from the source server has been finished already. At this phase, the tool modifies the contents of the vmdk file (i.e. replaces the drivers) to make it bootable as a VM. If you take a look at the following blog post, you can see the troubleshooting steps and how I determined the missing driver file's name in the converter logs.

http://adventuresofanitpro.blogspot.com/2008/08/vmware-converter-fails-at-99.html

Let me know if this helps.

ILKER
