98%FAILED: Unable to reconfigure the destination virtual machine. Win7x64

This topic has been written by automatic translation.

Please forgive me bad English.

I tried to convert the local machine of Windows 7 64 Bit.

However, the conversion does not complete with an error at 98%.

The content of the error is "FAILED: Unable to reconfigure the destination virtual machine."

A vmx file and a vmdk file are created at this point, but a blue screen error (0x7B) occurs when trying to start it.

I also tried unlocking the / 3GB switch according to vmware's KB, but it has no effect.

My Windows 7 is 64 Bit, so this KB will not be helpful.

I will attach an error log here.

i need your help.

Thank you.

The error during reconfiguration phase is: "Error 5 (error restoring key: Access is denied (5)) restoring registry key C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\data\SKUNKWORKS_FILLER"

This means that user you are using for the conversion has no sufficient privileges.

Try to reconfig only destination VM running the GUI at least "as administrator" or better with "administrator" user (or do the whole conversion again with user "administrator").

Thank you for your reply

I am executing vCenter converter with administrator.

Still why is access denied? Why?

I will not consider it to anyone. . .

Please help me.

There are 3 "types" of administrator: elevated, non elevated and user named "administrator".

Having an access denied error in %ProgramFiles% means - you have not proper access to required folders.

P.S. Do not forget to read the requirements in User's Manual, UAC, antivirus, etc.

Thank you for your reply.

I ran the administrator as an administrator account, but the situation did not change.
I use Kaspersky and Comodo Firewall, but they are disabled.

I attach a log when I ran as "administrator"

Is there any good solution?

Little bit strange, probably the user that installed Converter is not the same as user used for conversion, correct?... Or is it possible converter's services not to be executed as "Local System"?

The fastest solution is to allow full access to folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware vCenter Converter Standalone\", subfolders and objects for "Local Administrators" group (aka BUILTIN\Administrators).

Then run reconfig in case you keep the VM, or repeat conversion.

Place share the result.

Thank you for your reply.

I allowed full access but the results did not change.

I am confused because I can not understand the cause.

Is there anything else you need to do?

Thank you.

So the problem is in the registry hive then. Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE with regedit and invoke permissions (with right mouse click), then allow full access to "everyone group" (if not present just add it). Then restart the whole conversion and share the result.

Thank you for your reply.

I made a permission to access Everyone groups for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE in the registry hive.

But the situation has not improved.
What should I do?

Thank you.

This is incredible... Check your registry for existence of Services\rhelfltr key, and its permission.

If key exist, remove it or add explicit permission to it.

Place share the result.

A vmx file and a vmdk file are created at this point, but a blue screen error (0x7B) occurs when trying to start it.

boot the VM into recovery mode or use a Win7 Recovery or LiveCD.

After start is finished start regedit - select HKLM and then click "load hive"

Select the file C:\windows\system32\config\SYSTEM and give it a name - "p2v" for example.

Then find HKLM\p2v\ControlSet001\services\LSI_SAS and set the value for Start to 0.

Then unload the hive again and reboot

This is *not* relevant, place stop to write random "solutions"!

Nothing is about *this* conversion! Why?! Collecting points? Funny.

thank you everyone.
The problem solved safely.

I told you that access was denied, so I removed these factors.
When uninstalling security software, conversion is now possible.
(Kaspersky + Comodo Firewall)

I think that the HIPS function installed in Comodo Firewall was working even if it was turned off.

I appreciate your reply.

I'm glad to hear this! That's why we recommend to turn off/uninstall antivirus and similar applications before conversion. Smiley Happy
