Help Choosing my next Certification??

Help Choosing my next Certification??

Hi all,

First time posting hear, so hello!

My question is:

I hold a valid VCP5-DCV (version 5.5) and I was wondering what you recommend as my next level course??

My cert expires Feb. 2017, so I don't do the next level I will just renew my DCV (VCP6 I assume this time).

I see on this page: Data Center Virtualization Certification Solution Track Page

that my I should be considering VCAP6-DCV Design or VCAP6-DCV deploy. Correct?

What is the difference between the two exams?

How hard are they compared to the VCP5 exam?

Do I need a VCP6 before I can go to VCAP6 or is my VCP5 ok?

What do you guys think?

I love and enjoy the 'hardware' side of IT and hate programming side of things.

Thanks in advance!

I would update your VCP to 6 first. That brings you into the vSphere 6 timeline and allows you to say that your VCP is current. Since you have already been through the process you can use the blueprint and practice exams on mylearn to prep for it. Then after you hold a VCP6-DCV, I would go for the deploy VCAP. That one is a hands on deployment and troubleshooting cert. It aligns well with being a datacenter admin/engineer. Your design VCAP is an architect style cert that is useful in consulting practices but in my opinion is one above the deploy cert.

Firstly, please post things like this in future as a "discussion" rather than as a "document".

You will need to recertify prior to that date by passing a VCP level (or higher) exam - don't let your VCP expire.

You need to be either a VCP6-DCV holder, or a VCAP5 (DCA or DCD) holder before you can move to the VCAP6-DCV certifications - so your first step should be to achieve those.

What is the difference between the two exams?

Deployment is a live lab with tasks to perform, Design has you completing designs to certain guidelines and good practice.

How hard are they compared to the VCP5 exam?

The "A" in VCAP gives a clue - I did the VCP4-DCV then VCAP4-DCA and it was a significant step up. VCAP exams need special preparation, no doubt.

Do I need a VCP6 before I can go to VCAP6 or is my VCP5 ok?

As above, you either need VCP6-DCV, or at least one of the VCAP5 (DCA or DCD) first.

Thanks guys for your suggestions.

looks like  will get my VCP6-DCV first and go from their.

douglasarcidino that is a very good suggestion about becoming an engineer vs architect.

scott28tt    I will try to post correct next time. thanks for the heads up
