VSphere Temporary Backup Plan

VSphere Temporary Backup Plan

I'm planning on doing one P2V. Untill I get my Backup solution in place for VSphere, what should I use to backup this P2V machine? I have seen some scripts and then I figured I would have to transfer it over to a drive that is currently backed up. Any other suggestions?

You can always back it up the way you did when it was a physical machine if you are backing up over the network, nothing changes.

yes but using the current way (backupexec) how would I restore the system should I need to? Dont i really need a program that can restore the vmdk?

For easier disaster recovery, yes you should have a backup of the VMDK. Your question was what to do in the interim before you implement a backup solution.

Think about it this way: "What would you do in a physical world?" Build the OS, install the backup client and then restore the files/system state. You can do the same thing in vSphere: Create a new VM, Build the OS, install the backup client and then restore the files/system state.

You could create a clone of the VM, but that doesn't get it off site in case of a site disaster. You could also install the vMA and use the vGhettoVCB script -> http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-9843

Another alternative is to use the VDR and back up to a CIFS share that is backed up, as you already figured.
