vRanger to VDP

Has anyone switched from vRanger to VDP? How did you handle the transition with backups? We use vRanger today with DDBoost and plan to use DD with VDP as well but I'm concerned with space utilization because of needing to maintain the vRanger backups for the company retention time.

If you've switched, how did you handle retaining old backups while utilizing VDP? I would assume we'd be doubling the space utilization until the vRanger backups expire.

Cheers! If you found this or other information useful, please consider awarding points for "Correct" or "Helpful".

Technically speaking the data is already on the DataDomain so VDP will only send block changes. Therefore I would expect minimal extra space usage.  You can confirm by backing up a VM with VDP already backed up with vRanger and checking how much data was actually sent to the DD after the first backup.

DD's deduplication is system wide so this should be the case even when using a new storage unit.
