Hello and welcome to the communities.

Note: Discussion successfully moved from VMware ESX™ 4 to Backup & Recovery

What version of Sharepoint/SQL are you running and on what version of Windows?

You can get guaranteed application consistent backups with the SQL/Sharepoint services stopped, so you wouldn't need to power off the VM. What type/version is your backup software?

Sharepoint (just like Exchange or SQL) is complaint to VSS, so any backup software able to use VSS libraries should be good to be used. Microsoft does not supports crash consistent snapshots (without VSS) but "application aware" snapshots are totally supported.

Many backup software do support VSS.

There are two choices here:

(1) Use a backup product that can call a script to run prior to the job

(2) Run a script locally and then have the backup run - time-based scheduled approach.

Really? Where is that non reccomandation? Because I see the opposite:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb417449(v=office.12).aspx

and most of all this one:

http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/solutions/SharePoint_2010-Availability-and-Recovery-Options.pdf

If Microsoft does not support VSS backup, than this paper from VMware is wrong...
