need help regarding DR site implementation?

Dear All,

i have two sites One is primary and the second one is DR. i take the backup of primary site using vmware data recovery. but i read out the article that data recovery just take the backup of its local site vm. i want that this backup is replicate on the secondary DR site so that if any failure is occur at the primary site the vms take action at the DR site.

is there any solution so that i used the same backup tool without using Site Recovery manager.

the primary site contains six physical esxi host and the secondary contains four esxi host .

You can use 2 appliance.

Or only one with 2 destinations.

But IMHO is not so simple, so (if you must give the procedure to a normal user) consider to use other tools, like Veeam Backup and Replicator.

You can create a remote destination and another Backup Job.

Then (in case of DR) you have only to redeploy the VDR appliance, add the destination and make the restore.

you means that i deploy two vdr appliances at the primary site. the first take the backup of the local site and if any failure is occure i restore the vm from the local site storage and i installed vdr2 and allocate the remote storage location (i.e DR site location )store the primary site vm at the remote location (DR) site so that my primary site is failed i just register the vms at the DR site. is it correct procedure that i described?

hi andre,

i have 6 esxi host in my environment. 4 are in cluster and 2 are standalone. i install vsm at the standalone hosts for HA of vsm.

i have update manager and i update all esxi 6 esxi host from update manager. my question is that should i also add the standalone host in the nexus switch or not (standalone host on which vsm is installed). i add the 4 esxi cluster host in the nexus switch, but i am little bit confused about that will i also add the remaining 2 host on which vsm is installed add in the swtich or not?

i also need help about that, i create 4 uplink port profile type Ethernet

1- management network

2-production network

3-dmz

4-vmotion these are the uplink profile.

5-iscsi

now i create vethernet port type vethernet and that are like this

1-vmanagement network

2-vproduction

3-vdmz

4-vmotion

5-vsm

6-viscsi

and i assign the same vlan which i already assign in the above uplink port for accessing it.(for eg i assign vlan 20-30 in the management profile and when i create vmanagement profiel i assign vlan 21)

is this the correct thing i do?

In order to power-on the VM without reconfigure their networking you need to have the same network configuration.

Same portgroups, at least... Non necessary same pNIC or same vSwitch.

Hi,

How big you backup destination? If all you VMs fits in one backup destination like 200 gig or 300 gig, then copy the entire vDR configuration and destination another Windows / Linux machine and backup this to take. At the DR Site, restore the vDR as a whole configuration and backup destination, check integrity and start restoring your VMs.

Another method, if you can present one LUN from the SAN Storage at the DR Site to be as a Backup Destination for the vDR located at the production site/primary site, then backup all your VMs to the LUN that's presented from the remote/DR SAN Storage. At the DR Site, have another vDR, presented the LUN to it and check the integrity and start restoring your VMs.

With regards to your networking, for sure the production networks/vLANs has been stretched to the DR Site, then have all your production portgroups to be available at the DR Site. And have a test portgroups without outbound adapters or without vLAN ID / connectivity to the production site just to avoid network conflict. When you want to test the VMs integrity or test your DR, just create a script to move the DR VMs from test portgroup to the production portgroups and you are done.

Hope it helps....
