VMWare backup method

Hi,

we are using exsi version 5.1 and it is standalone not part of v-center.

we would like to know what are the best way to back all the vm m/c host on this hypervisor.

if we plan to have vcb so do we need to buy that or is it free one.

we have vertias as our backup solution vendor it will be good if somebody can guide how to get this done via veritas.

Thanks

Commercial backup applications usually require a "paid" license of vSphere/ESXi to be able to fully access the API. Basically, your options are to take a look at free backup utilities like ghettoVCB (http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-8760) or purchase a vSphere Essentials license to allow the appropriate API access for the backup applications.

You can create a script to run locally on each VCB server to call the VCB framework. Just change the config.js to use hotadd mode. The script would look something like this:
C:
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\generic" cscript pre-command.wsf "
C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework" %1 fullvm

Cheers, Yours Udin

When copying text 1:1 from more than two year old posts ( Re: Hotadd backup method explanation ?) you should at least make sure the line beaks in the commands are correct.

As other experts mentioned, you need the paid version of ESXi to use vStorage APIs. Since you have NetBackup and assuming that you have spare licenses (or capacity to license), you can protect your VMs with NetBackup clients inside VM. It is the old school method, but NetBackup does have support for bare metal recovery and hence you are covered for both full VM protection as well as individual file recovery. Later if you do move to paid version of ESXi, you can also look into advanced vStorage API based protection using NetBackup.

Good luck!
