VDR backup when connected directly to ESXi host (no vCenter)?

I have a single ESXi vShpere host with VDR appliance configured and running. I do not have vCenter. I have the plugin installed in my vSphere client and I am able to configure it. I created a backup job and have scheduled it to run, however I get the following message in th events and the log

" Connected to ESX Server, automated backups will not be peformed."

Does VDR work when connected directly to an ESXi 4 host with no vCenter? If yes, what is my next step in troubleshooting this issue?

NO.

Automated operation with VDR requires vCenter Server. You can manually run operations (backup, restore, integroty checks) without presence of a vCenter Server.
