VDP License?

Jump to solution

Hi all,

I just deployed VDP Appliance 6.1 for testing (download OVA file from https://my.vmware.com/group/vmware/details?productId=491&downloadGroup=VDP613#errorCheckDiv)

on my ESXi 5.5 lab. My question is, do i need to purchase the license for this Appliance?

Refer to https://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/vsphere/backup-recovery page, on VDP vs VDPA Comparison menu, there's no pricing for VDP. Thanks.

from VDP 6

you don't need to buy additional license for VDP.

VDP is included with vSphere Essentials Plus

What's New with vSphere Data Protection 6.0 and vSphere Replication 6.0 - Virtual Blocks

One of the new advanced features in VDP 6.0 is the addition of backup agents for Microsoft SQL Server, Exchange, and SharePoint. The agents enable application consistent backup and recovery of these applications on virtual and physical machines including the ability to select individual databases for backup and restore, enable multiple stream backups, and truncate database logs. These agents support SQL Server Failover and AlwaysOn Clusters and Exchange Database Availability Groups.

Hi,

At this moment, VDP Advanced is part of VMware vSphere. So, you will only see single 'flavor' of VDP.

VDP deployment itself do not require separate license. You only need vSphere Essentials plus license or higher to use the product. Please refers to the following KB article for more details.

So,it means I dont need to buy the license to use VDP? In other words, VDP is a limited version of VDP Advance? What about SQL Server Backup, as i can't see this feature at VDP (https://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/vsphere/backup-recovery) ?

I still confused between this 2 version of VDP, as i know since 1 March 2015, VDP Advance consolidated into VDP.

hi,

if you have plan to add VDP to production as new implementation I would suggest to consider VMware's recent announcement. VMware announced  the End Of Availability (EOA) for vSphere Data Protection. vSphere 6.5 is the last release to include vSphere Data Protection and future vSphere releases will no longer include this product.

please refer this article for more details.

https://blogs.vmware.com/virtualblocks/2017/04/05/vsphere-data-protection-end-availability/

As a result of that customer feedback and new direction, we are announcing the End Of Availability (EOA) for vSphere Data Protection. vSphere 6.5 is the last release to include vSphere Data Protection and future vSphere releases will no longer include this product.
