Using vSphere Data Protection to backup Windows Server 2012

Hiya,

Did anyone succeed in backing up Windows Server 2012 VM's with VDP?

When running the job, all VMs fail to be backed up.

I see VDP is creating snapshots and removing them, but the process still fails.

Below is the event generated for each VM that VDP tried to backup.

"Execution error: E10055:Failed to attach disk.."

Once I have an update myself, I will update the topic.

Cheers!

René

Well,

After submitting this topic I hit upon the following KB article provided by VMware:

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=2035736&sliceId=1&doc...

This article describes that the disk.EnableUUID parameter of each VM should be set to 'false' before backups can be made.

The article is meant for Windows Server 2008 R2, but I'm going to give it a shot 😃

Cheers,

René

I tested the parameter on one VM and was able to backup this VM now! Just to be sure I will edit more VMs and report back here.

It seems VDP can backup Windows Server 2012 without any issue! 😃

Had the same problems with VDP backing up my Win 2008 R2 VMs.....

I actually googled that KB which fixed my problem.

Next time I think I should just search the communities first! 😃

My main gripe about this is you need to power off the VM before configuring the disk.EnableUUID to false..... this can be a huge PiTA if you have nearly a 100 VMs in your environment!

I wonder if this problem exists on VDP advanced....... I've yet to deploy it to test, will post my findings later.....

What worries me is this is a known issue...... if this is a known issue, will it be fixed or will there be a better work around that doesn't involve powering off the VM that needs protecting?

Does anyone know if Avamar has the same problems? I'm currently trying to get hold of a copy of Avamar Virtual Edition to try out........ again, will post my findings later.
