Using Vmware Data Recovery without Vcenter

Hello

I am lead to believe that you can use VDR to restore backups without Vcenter server. Since my Vcenter server is Virtualised in a DR scenario I would need to recover this backup using VDR.

Can this be done if so how?

I have set up an ESX machine and installed the plugin and deployed the appliance but I cant connect to the appliance in the Vmware Client.

Thanks

Yes it is possible.

Instead of connecting vSphere Client to the vCenter Server, connect to the ESX host that the VDR appliance is running on. Then click on the VDR icon under Solutions you will need to reauthenticate to the ESX host login/password - if not, run the Setup Wizard again (under the configuration tab). Re-attempt to do a restoration.

I am actually looking at a total loss of the infrastructure scenario.

So connecting to the current ESX host that has the VDR appliance on it does work, I am trying to connect to a VDR appliance that was freshly installed and never been part of Vcenter.

Yes you can and it's the same. just that you need to mount the destination of where the files of vdr are being backup up.

Thats the problem I cant get that far, it wont let me connect to the appliance from the vmware client.

If I use the dns name/ IP / or the vm name I still cant connect with no error. It tries then says not connected.

Configure a new VDR appliance from scratch and add the old destination to it. VDR will then recognize all the backups done and you should be able to restore...

Ok I figured it out.

The ESX host I was using for testing had a Free licenses on it which of course does not have support for VDR, changed the license to one of our licenses and re-deployed the appliance and it works now.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi

Can i use vdr on vmware workstation ?

Using VMware Data Recovery without vCenter?

I'm running a lab with workstation, even virtual center and esx hosts are virtualized but cannot run a 64bits virtual machine

inside the esx virtualized, so my question again is:  Can i use VDR on vmware workstation and then connect the virtual machine

to virtual center ?

Thanks

You can backup Vmware workstation disk format with VDR, you cannot configure VDR without Vcenter from what I have tried. I can't set it up on a standalone ESXi that has never been in VCenter, so I would assume the same goes for workstation.

Respect, ok. I have a real need to do that, if you don't know how to do that, please remain in silence and stop making wrong accusation

By hijacking a post I mean asking a question within someone else's question, after it has been resolved. Take a look at the last post date before you start posting in a question. Better yet, if you have a question, open your own.

The guy who made this post asked a question, it was resolved, then you come along a year and a half later and ask another question. You should have opened a new question. As you can see, you asked your question twice and no one responded, because this is a resolved post.

I didn't say there was anything wrong with your question. And I made some points to help steer you in the right direction. Sorry for trying to help you get an answer to your question.

And after a year you come with this ?

I'm free to ask question in any web page, in any post or whatever
