Slow VM backup up to 1Gbps per host

Hi,

we are facing to slow backup performance of VMs. Each host in cluster is connected with two 10Gbps interfaces. No any 1gbps uplink there.

Direct (agent based) backup from INSIDE of VMs is fine (e.g. exchange store, databases) is pretty fast and parallel backup jobs can reach up to 100% of network bandwidth. OK.

BUT

VM based backups of whole virtuals are slow. Maximum performance is up to 1Gbps per one physical host or less (sometimes much less).

Is there any hidden traffic shaping or something similar? I know that vmware/esxi prioritize network for guest VMs, so regular backup (management traffic) is affected and slower, but SO MUCH?

Or any other problem/restriction... unfortunatelly a have no access to vmware management, I am just on the backup side

Many thanks for any hint/advice/solution/opinion...

Ondrej

Is this slow backup performance new or has it been this way from the start? What mode is your backup software using? NBD? What version of ESXi?
