Hello,
I have 1 server proliand g5 with 6 hosts and a data store of 2TB (2 x 995GB) but it is not half full
I am only backing up files and i wat to go with Veem
Question!
should i buy a second server with less storage and do a replication
It nees to have the excats same hardware?
or
buy a NAS and backup on that
Seems simple but i dont know waht to do:)
Price is alwase a concern i a small buisness!
Whether to replicate to another hosts (which does not need to be the same hardware, but should at least have the same processor vendor) or backup to a backup device depends on your needs on how fast you have to be back in business in case of a disaster. Anyway, for Veeam or any other commercial application you need paid ESXi licenses (at least vSphere Essentials)!

You should store your backup outside of your single server.
A replication to a second server would be not bad of course, but thats more a BC solutions to get your VM fast running again. Overall VMware HA would be much better, but requires of course licences. A backup you mostly want to store for a long time with many recovery points, so here you take the backup function of veeam and not the replication one.
Hardware doens´t need to be the same (if you would choose the second server way), but keep in mind that Veeam doesn´t work with the free ESXi hypervisor (you didn´t mention your current licence / version).

Mario
A second server may be a good idea not just from a straight backup perspective but also for standby host in case of issue with your primary server.

Thank you all for the help, i will go for a second server!
Now Veeam or VRanger??
Veeam is the #1 product at the moment yet this might not be the right product for your environment.
I suggest you download a trial on both and get testing
I have a second server (1 Compaq 1 IBM)
When i try to do a migrate/change host i get HOST CPU INCOMPATIBLE and a buntch of other error!
I am prety shure they are both XEON proc
Tks
I have trouble geting prices for that product.
Any idea of waht is the aprox price?
You will have to contact a reseller for actual info considering your needs.
There is a post with the new pricing which can be found here.
I think a cluster with EVC enabled can fix this problem. You need a vCenter with correct licensing for this tho.
Waht do you mean with "I think a cluster with EVC"
I suggest reading up on EVC on the FAQ KB. You can see if both CPU's are compatible.
Basicly if you have a vCenter you can cluster both the hypervisor and on that cluster you enable EVC (Enhanced vMotion Compatibility) which can resolve this issue.
