Restoring VM's using Netbackup to ESXi host

Hi,

In my environment we use Symantec Netbackup 7.1. We backup VM's using our vCenter server to a Netbackup 5000 device & the backups are then copied out to our Disaster Recovery site over a 100MB link.

In our Disaster Recovery site we have 3 ESXi 4.1 hosts & no vCenter server. Is it possible to restore a VM directly to a host instead of going through vCenter?

after restoring VMs on target datastores you can manually register them through vsphere client.

To register virutal machine.

1. Open the vSphere / VMware Infrastructure (VI) Client and log into ESXi host with appropriate credentials (root).
2. Click the Configuration tab.
3. Click Storage.
4. Right-click on the appropriate datastore and click Browse Datastore.
5. Navigate to the folder named after the virtual machine, and locate the <virtual machine>.vmx file.
6. Right-click the .vmx file and click Add to inventory. The Add to Inventory wizard opens.
7. Continue to follow the wizard to add the virtual machine.

Is it possible to restore a VM directly to a host instead of  going through vCenter?

On the NBU Master, go to Media and Device Management -> Credentials -> Virtual Machine Servers. Add the ESXi host(s) at the DR site here. Note that you may have to restart NBU services for this to work.

Now when you perform the restore, choose the Alternate Location option. Change the vCenter Server drop-down menu to blank and then you can specifiy the ESXi host directly.
