Problem with Windows server 2012 Failover Clustering setup

Hi, I have a strange issue regarding setup of MS cluster on server 2012, after i follow to the letter the instruction how to setup in the box cluster i get error on cluster validation. I have  vcenter 5.1 and esxi 5.1 and i followed Setup for Failover Clustering and Microsoft Cluster Service ESXi 5.1, vCenter Server 5.1 document i found on vmware site, after i create and configure two VM by the specification listed in document (Clustering MSCS Virtual Machines on a Single Host) i select cluster validation and got a following error: Validate Storage Spaces Persistent Reservation failed.

I suspected on storage but HP P2000 g3 support SCSI-3. After that i decided to create Quorum disk on local datastore and i used a virtual disk with SCSI BUS Sharing as virtual which is also suported and i got a same error. After that i recreated all on another system (using EVA6400 and HP BL460c gen 😎 and again same error. It does not matter if i use a virtual disk or Non-pass-through RDM (virtual compatibility mode) as a quorum again same error. If i can not clear this issue i will not be able to use Microsoft support on the cluster because first thing they ask is a cluster validation raport that need to be with out an error.

Thanks

Hi bhDofa,

I realize it's been a little while since this post and I'm not sure if you've been able to resolve your issue.  According to the vSphere 5.1 Release Notes, Windows Server 2012 Failover Clustering is not supported and there are known issues.

From the release notes:

Windows Server 2012 Failover Clustering is not supported
If you try to create a cluster for Failover Clustering in Windows Server 2012, and select to run validation tests, the wizard completes the validation tests with warnings, and after that returns to running the validation tests again. The wizard in the Windows Server 2012 guest operating system does not continue to the cluster creation stage.

Workaround: None.

Unfortunately I don't know of any time table for a workaround or a patch to resolve the issue.

I successfully created a FC on Win2012 across the two esxi servers 5.1 and it is working with no problems, the only problem was the warning in validation wizard on my luck Microsoft support state that they do not provide support only if you have an error in validation wizard.

I’m hoping that VMware will support it soon because it is a great option for HA.

Thanks for the fast reply.  Out of curiosity, did you have to do anything special to make it work based on the problems you were having?  The vSphere 5.1 release notes seem to indicate that if you try to run the validation tests they do not succeed and you do not proceed to the cluster creation process.

No everything was smooth and simple, the only thing was that warning on validation test.

Hi,

I'm trying to setup clustering across two vms but for the disks I had to change the SCSI Bus Sharing to "Physical". After that the 2 nodes were able to see the disks under Storage in the FC Manager. Not using RDM but just VMFS. Did you have to do the same thing or is there any other setting whihc needs to be changed?

Thanks,
Amit
