Most "future safe" backup

I am about to backup a guest from an ESXi 3.5

The running machine itself is going to be taken of the network and only going to be used again several years in the future.

I am thinking on what would be the most "future safe" backup - in the sense that the backup should be taken out from the dusty safe and be restored onto whatever virtual platform is available in the future.

I am thinking of using VMware Converter and convert the machine into an ova-format - I know that it is difficult to tell the future, but do you have any better suggestions than the above?

Regards, Lars.

I would have to agree, using converter to get it into a virtual appliance may be your best solution.

Also store copies of the Converter and ESXi so that you can create a Host just in case.

Converter could be fine.

And you can use converter also to change the format from ESXi to VMware Server/Workstation/Player.
