Intermittent VDR client login failures

Environment:

vCenter 4.1

ESX 4.0 update 2

VDR 1.2

History:

Previously running VDR 1.1

Install VDR 1.2

Detached .vmdk backup store from 1.1

Attach to 1.2

Run Integrity Check

Problem:

VDR client plugin installed on a XP machine and on a Win7 laptop.

XP machine with plugin always connects

Win7 machine with plugin connects ~%20 of the time

After clicking the "Connect" button the screen flashes and "Attempting to Connect" and after 1 or 2 seconds goes back to the connect screen.

Actions:

Uninstall plugin, reinstall plug

Reboot vCenter and VDR usually resolves temporarily

Sounds strongly like a network related issue.

When the Win7 box connects, does it stay connected? If not how long?

Did you verify the DNS between vCenter/vDR/Client machine? (Long/Short)

Did you try pinging between client and vDR to confirm reliable communication?

I disagree that it sounds like a network related issue. The XP client and the Win7 client are on the same gigabit network segment. Pings to vDR from vCenter and Win7 client (long/short) are good with < 1ms response times. I'd like to hear from anyone that has had similar issues so that we can narrow this down to an issue with the client or with the vDR appliance.
