ESXi Free Edition (Backups)

I am running ESXi free edition with 2 VM's. As I took over the admin spot I realized the servers were not being backed up. I bought a Synology and the backups worked fine even CBT enabled. The host rebooted and now CBT does not work. I tried resetting CBT several times but no luck. Is it because I'm running a free version of ESXi? If so, how was it working originally before the reboot of the host?
