Consolidated Backup with pre-existing NetBackup Master

Hi,

We're trying to configure Consolidated Backup (v1.5). We already use Netbackup (v6.0) for all our physical machines.

All the documentation seems to suggest we install VCB, the Consolidated Backup Integration Module & NetBackup on to the Proxy server. The documentation goes on to suggest we install NetBackup as a Master Server on the Proxy. But we'd like to use our existing NetBackup Master, which has tape storage etc already connected.

Are we able to install NetBackup as a client on the Proxy and hook it into an existing NetBackup Master?

Thanks very much for any help on this

It depends on how you want to back up. You can create a media server and install the framework there. You could install it on the master server or you could install it on a client machine. The client machine will also need the admin console installed if you go that route.

I wrote two guides around VCB. One is generic -> http://www.dailyhypervisor.com/2010/01/15/setting-up-vcb-for-any-backup-software-revisited/

One is for NBU and vRanger -> http://communities.vmware.com/docs/DOC-11417

Careful. We don't want to learn from this.

Thansk very much - your document heldped enormously.

In summary, for anyone else with teh same issue:

Original problem. Getting a "npstart_notify error (73)" on netback console when trying to run a full vm backup.

Setup: netbackup 6.0, Vcb 1.5, Integration module

Solution:

Ran vcbMounter.exe to run a manual FullVM Backup using the syntax suggested at 5.1 of the above hyper visor document

This give us an error that an "existing snapshot" was present.

vcbCleaner.bat didn’t delete this so we used esx VI to delete the snapshot

ran the vcbMounter again and got an error that vcb couldn’t access the san (it's a DELL / Equallogic ISCSI SAN)

So changed the vcb mode to "ndb"

FullVM Completed successfully.

To get the netbackup to perform the backup we changed the config.js to reflect the change to "ndb" mode.

Job closed, with thanks!
