Backup of VM Guest

people, I have VMWare ESXi 4 installed on HP DL120, and now I have created a VM with FreeBSD on Guest OS,

I need to know if this ESXi have support to do a backup of full VM? or if I can take a snapshot and restore this snap as a new VM Guest?

Hi

You can use veeam backup and fastscp to make copies f the vm but then you will need to schedule for it to be shutdown it you want it backed up often.

Snapshots arent great for long standing backups and using the snapshot as a "restore" for a new vm isn't possible without a fair amount of fiddling. Snapshots are are like restore points in windows.

You can also clone the machine and save it somewhere for future restoring

Snapshots should not be your primary source of backing up a VM. They are used for short, almost testing phases. If you run on snapshots for too long they can drag your VM down in performance and fill up your disk storage. If you have problems with FastSCP you can always try WinSCP, I've never had any issues with that program.

Hello,

Using VMware VDR, vRangerPro, or other tools yes.

If the VM is powered off you can use VMware Converter or even workstation 7 to export the VM from the host.

Or you can if the VM is running and you have vCenter, hot clone the VM then power off the clone and make a backup using one of the tools mentioned. Converter is free btw.
