Backup Queries.

Hi Gurus,

In my environment, I have 3 ESXi and multiple VM's. I have few queries related to backups. Some of the VM's are Thick Provisioned and some of the VM's are thin provisioned. I want to do a backup of the VMs and move them to an NFS server as part of the Backup. Below are my queries.

  1. The VM  which is thick provisioned has a 500 GB Datastore and it has data around 100GB in it. If I want to take a full backup of the VM do the size of the NFS share needs to be the same as the data store or it can be the same as the amount of data in the datastore i:e 100 GB?
  2. There is another VM that is thin provisioned but has a 500 GB Datastore presented to it and has around 100 GB data in it. If I take a backup of the VM can I use a 120GB NFS share to do the backup of the VM?

Thanks all in advance for all the help

Thanks

Anjan

What software are you planning to use to take these backups? Asked another way, how do you intend to back them up?

I am planning to use VMWare native Backup like using clone to Template and later introduce Veeam to the environment.

Thanks

Cloning to a template is not a backup strategy. That and using Veeam are completely different. I'd strongly recommend that you go with Veeam and just be done with it. Thick lazy zero disks do not occupy backup space in the case of Veeam.
