Backup Guest OS

Hello,

What are you suggestions to backup a Guest OS on a ESXi 4.1. The plan is to upgrade hosts to ESXi 5.1.

- Taking Snapshots is not an option, there is no space.

- Download Guest OS to another machine through vSphere Client is not an option

- Cloning is not an option, as it renames path and files.

Thank you

Welcome to the Community - SInce teh vSphere backup solution all require the use of snapshots you will have to fall back on the old school of installing a backup agent in the VM -

You mean that there wouldn’t any space to store a snapshot even for the backup job duration? Then it seems that you’ve definitely underprovisioned required resources, leaving no opportunity for your virtual infrastructure to grow, etc.

Anyway, we’re backing up our VMs, using Veeam free edition (that is an image-based solution) with its VeeamZIP functionality, and quite happy with it.

Thanks.
