Long story short.... a running VM got deleted and overwritten on a NAS formatted with EXT4.
The VMDK was well over 200GB in size and only 5GB got written back to the volume before it was realized and the volume unmounted. extundelete and also "paid for" data recovery specialists were unable to recover the flat vmdk.
But with the exception of the 5GB that was over written all the "blocks" should still contain the data.
Is there any tool or utility to scan the NAS and pull individual files from within the VMDK without having an entire working VMDK?
Basically a raw data recovery tool that can align to the stacked virtual volume rather than the underlying host volume.
