vSPhere VM unprotected in HA cluster

Hello VMware user

i have a very strange problem, with my vmware ha cluster and nfs.

vSphere is installed on two HP ProLiant DL380 Gen8 Servers

vCenter is running on a HP ProLiant DL160 G6.

NFS and iSCSI is running on a HP ProLiant DL180 G8

In my datacenter I configured a cluster with HA and DRS, on both cluster nodes the iscsi and nfs data stores are mounted.

If I create or move a virtual machine to the nfs data storage the vm will be unprotected but if I move the vm to the iscsi datastore, the vm will be protected.

The virtual machine failed to become vSphere HA Protected and HA may not attempt to restart it after a failure.

I found many users with these problems and tried the following :

- Disable and enable the HA option

- Remove nodes from cluster, delete cluster, create cluster, add nodes again.

- Delete the old vCenter and installed a new windows server with the latest vCenter version

But nothing helps, does anyone have an idea?

thank you.

so you have vswitch0 with 2 vmk interfaces. one for management and one for vmotion and nfs?

do you have configured LACP or something similar on the physical switches? if yes you have to select the load balancing type IP hash..

this may be the reason why the cluster thinks that the cluster is not high available

it could also be a known error from vmware: http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=202008...

please compare the version. maybe you are affected.

thank you for the fast answer

on both nodes i created/use the vSwitch0 with 4 nics (2 per switch)

on these switch i have an management network and one for vmotion and fault tolerance (with ONLY ipv6 adresses, i dont want to use ipv4 in dmz)

the name on the nodes are the same, with the same id:

raid6-24tb-vms -> ccaee5da-fb932ba1

Thank you so much Smiley Happy

i do not use LACP on my switches. But the link was very helpful...

the logfile (/var/log/fdm.log)

verbose fdm[FFF08B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Cluster opID=SWI-3ab50c2a] [HBDatastore::Heartbeat] Creating heartbeat file for /vmfs/volumes/ccaee5da-fb932ba1

error fdm[3E981B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Cluster opID=SWI-45c5af75] stat(/vmfs/volumes/ccaee5da-fb932ba1/.vSphere-HA/FDM-f72a48d3-dba6-4858-9227-c384bd497bcd-8-548dcf2) failed with Permission denied

error fdm[3E981B70] [Originator@6876 sub=Cluster opID=SWI-45c5af75] [HBDatastore::OpenHeartbeatFile] Can't verify datastore path for datastore /vmfs/volumes/ccaee5da-fb932ba1

so i removed the folder .vSphere-HA/ and now it works fine Smiley Happy
