i have two ESX 4 each with 2 NICs in a cluster, in the configuration|network adapters tab, i can see both are wake on LAN suppported. i want to test the WOL, but in one ESX, the menu item "enter standby mode" is gray out. why? thanks in advance
I think you have to configure the DPM first, and it should depend on your Server (Dell, HP, ...).
For example for Dell Servers you have to configure IPMI (Intelegent Platform Management interface) and then you can test the stand by mode.
Take a look at this link it you have dell server, otherwise you will find something similar to the server type that you use:
Thanks,
Also this feature must turned on in BIOS.
StarWind Software R&D
i have set the DPM setting to manual, but the menu item is still greyed out. i'm not sure whether my dell server have DRAC like HP iLO. i just want to only test WOL. is this still need to be enabled in BIOS?
Even if you do not have a DRAC in your DELL servers you should be
able to configure IPMI using the shared NIC feature. IPMI is standard
on most DELL servers even without the DRAC installed.
I assume that the process is very similar if you have HP or IBM
servers. If you are having trouble configuring IPMI/iLO properties for
those kinds of servers, check that IPMI is enabled.
i will find time to configure it in my dell.
