Redundancy - Failover and HA

Hi All

I have a project I'm working on and the PM has asked if I can cost a single ESXi server to run a handful of VM's. So I have no problem doing this but I want to stress that adding a second node for some redundancy would be the better option, however I'm not 100% sure how to achieve this on a low budget.

I have a model that I normaly use that includes shared storage (SAN directly connected to two phisical servers) but can't use this due to cost restraints, so I have to go down the route of using just 2 servers to achieve some sort of redundancy. As my knowledge is limited at present on this topic is it possible to run this type of features on just 2 servers using their "local storage" and if so what options are open to me via the different VMware licences?

Many thanks in advance..

It looks like the only feasible option is VSAN but although you can use 2 Hosts, there are some limitations and is recommended 3 Hosts.

However, you will have to do your own reading and costing. The resource links below should help :-
