Note: Discussion successfully moved from VMware ESXi 5 to Availability: HA & FT

How many hosts do you have in the cluster?

As long as their are sufficient resources HA will not be affected unless of course if you have a two node cluster than you you will no longer be protected by HA -

HA is usually to protect your infrastructure against host hardware failure. If you enable DRS on the same cluster when one host is put on maintenance the VM's will be automatically moved to other host when set DRS automation level to fully automated.

You will get an error if there are running VMs on the host you try to put into maintanance mode. The job will wait until you power off or migrate those VMs onto the other host.

As schepp mentioned you will not be able to put it to maintenance till the VM's are migrated. if you want to test HA you will have to bring the host down.

well it would depend on the fact if you have admission control enabled or not. without admission control you should be able to place it in to maintenance mode. although when you do, you are running virtually unprotected.
