FT - image VM location

had an interesting question posed to me today.  If we implement FT on a VM, can we direct the secondary "image" vm to exist on a specific Host vs letting the FT decide which available host to place it on?

Hi, after you enabled FT, you can rightclick the vm and select migrate secondary VM, then you can chose the Host for the secondary VM.-

If DRS is enabled there is no way to specify the host for the FT secondary.  DRS automatically chooses the best host.  If DRS is not enabled, then you would be prompted for where to put the secondary.

As turning off DRS is not advised Smiley Happy,  the best the work around is after enabling FT to vmotion the secondary to your preferred host.

Hi, when you enable FT for one VM, the DRS settings for that VM will be "disabled" automatically

Hi,

This discussion got me second guessing DRS' role in placing FT secondaries so I did some research.

Unfortunately, there is no way to choose where the secondary will be placed.  When you enable FT for a VM the VC, either by using DRS or an alternate algorithm if DRS is not enabled, will dynamically chose a target host for the FT secondary.

The best we can do is after enabling FT, VMotion the secondary VM to the preferred host.

Even I am really late to answer but some how I come across this query and thought to answer.:

You can place the original (or Primary virtual machine). You have full control with DRS or vMotion to assign it to any node. The placement of the Secondary, when created, is automatic based on the available hosts. But when the Secondary is created and placed, you can vMotion it to the preferred host.
