Edit serial device to guest VM, using vim-cmd (vimsh) or other alternatives?

I am trying to automate editing a serial device on a guest VM.  I can do so using vSphere SDK.  However, because we are using free version of ESXi, we can only use the vSphere SDK for read-only operations.

I have noticed that there are some unofficial tools, such as vim-cmd (vimsh), that can also automate some tasks in command line.  But can I use it to call SDK?  Or are there any other 3rd party tools that can work with SDK for write operations, without purchasing a license for ESXi?
