Automate Assigning Static IP to VM without using VMware tools

Hi,

I have a Centos 6.8 based OVA which I want to distribute, using which the users can deploy VMs and start using them.

I would like to automate the process of deploying the VMs and configuring networking (Assign user supplied static IP, netmask, gateway, hostname, etc) on them and execute some custom scripts once the VM comes up .

I know I can achieve all this using a PowerCLI script while the guest OS in the VMs is running VMware tools.

But I have one issue with this approach - it requires the VMs to run VMware tools or open-vm-tools inside the guest OS, which is not desirable as they are of no use to the user once the deployment/configuration is complete.

Is there a way the desired deployment/configuration objectives can be met without using VMware tools or their open-source counterpart?

Thanks,

Ums

May not be exactly what you are looking for but see if the details on the thread https://communities.vmware.com/thread/516999 would help.
