Migrating from Windows Vcenter to VCSA 6.5 and it's effect on vRops?

I originally posted this question to the vCenter forum, but haven't had any feedback on it.   Our vcenter servers are currently windows based, running 6.0 update 2a.  Our vRops 6.4 environment has a little over 6 months of collected metrics.  I'm starting to plan out our migration to vCenter 6.5, and if possible, I'd like to migrate to the appliance.

What effect will migrating to the vcenter appliance have on my vRops installation?  Will vRops recognize that the objects managed by the old vcenter have been migrated to the new vcenter appliance and continue collecting metrics for them, or will it treat them as new objects?

Yes, the objects and values will be the same. While migrating, the raw data(object information) will be moved to new machine without any manipulation.

Ideally, during vCenter upgrade from any version to newer one, the data will be intact only the database schema will be changed based on the version update. All the existing objects will hold same id and will be same, hence we are seeing the same inventory or object in the vCenter after upgrade without any major change.

vROPs side, you may have to re-register the vCenter server which I am not sure, your vROPS should continue with same objects as there is no change in the vCenter objects during upgrade.

Always have a backup plan or restore option to bring back to same setup before trying anything.

Hi Suresh,

Thanks for responding to my question.  Just to confirm, you're thinking that even though I'm migrating from Windows vCenter to the Linux appliance, the object id's will still remain the same?  This would be ideal if thats the case.

Suresh,

I gave this a try in a lab environment, and have confirmed you are correct.  My migrated objects came across intact, with vRops recognizing the objects after the migration.  This is very cool!
