Relationship with custom properties with friendly names for networks

Hello,

Basically I wanted to use the Value expression for networks but using a friendly name for the network as the network profile names would only confuse the user.  We created four areas (apps, web, db and gen) and 3 network classes (prod, dev UAC) for a total of 12 network profiles.  I've got the expression working but need to map a friendly name of "prod" to a specific network profile for that area and class.  So a app server which should be in prod you would hit those dropdowns but the "prod" would actually map to the specific vwire/network name for app server that are prod.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Yup this is a common request.  You will need to use vCO to do the translation.  Your Property Dictionary items will have the Friendly Name that the user selects and then you will run a vCO workflow during WFStubBuildingMachine that would do the translation and write the property back to vCAC for which network to place the machine on.  I would be more than happy to build something that can do this for you.  Depending on available time I can put it together by sometime later this week or early next week.  It's something I have been wanting to blog anyway.

Sid,

Thank you for the reply and the generous offer!  Please let me know if I can provide anything.  I appreciate anything you can do.

I was actually at your site prior to your comment looking for an answer.  I didn't find this specific solution but your site has been a tremendous help otherwise!

Many Thanks!

Yup this may take a little more effort so might take me a bit longer to put it together.  I've pretty much mapped out what needs to be done.  It's surprisingly more complex that you would think.  Because the network would end up needing to be changed after the request is submitted it requires the release of the originally assigned address and then the re-allocation of a new address form the network profile.  Sounds straight forward, but the way it's structured there is a bunch of moving parts.  No worries though I seems like it will be a fun one to build.
