Provisioning Machine Question

Im setting up Horizon and App Volumes for the first time and am at the point I need to create my provisioning vm for App Volumes.  All the documentation seems to say to create a new VM as close to the Golden Image as possible....

Is there anything wrong with just duplicating the current Golden Image and renaming it and using that as a Provisioning VM or does it really need to be a brand new freshly created VM?

Yes that's a standard practice, just clone the golden image and make sure you remove it from the domain if the golden image was and add it as the new name. This is preferred to creating a new vm as it copies the computers sid, which if different can break some applications.

Its suggested at here, but doesn't say it exactly, its all the points that talk about a common SID. Any new machine or a clone that has sysprep ran on it will change the sid and cause problems.

Best Practices for Provisioning Virtual Machines and Applications

they come short of saying it since its not technically required for some apps.
