AppVolumes 2.10 and profile only template

Hi,

I did fresh AppVolumes 2.10 installation few days ago and decided to create some virtual volumes for my users. And it seems that there is no profile only template for writable volumes, only UIA and UIA + Profile templates. Is it expected thing? How can I fix this if I want to have only user profile on virtual volume? Thanks.

App Volumes 2.10 supports only 2 templates for writable volumes - UIA and UIA + Profile. The "profile only" template was supported in the previous versions (2.9 and below).

Was there any reason why was this template removed from 2.10 version? Is it possible to create such template for myself? Thanks.

My guess is (but just speculating here) that they have UEM for it. UEM is capable of saving application settings and could be a substitute for Profile only writable volume.

The only downside to this (not only VMWare's UEM for that matter but every profile solution) is that you have to explicitly tell the applications what settings to safe.

Also, this info needs to be copied to the machine during startup of the application. If you have apps that use a few 100 of MB's in their profile (looking at you Google Chrome) you'd be stuck with an application that takes ages to start up.

That being said. We never used the profile only writable volumes but you could download the 2.9 version (if you have the licenses), copy the template files of this version to a datastore and copy the profile only writable volume onto your production datastore in the folder cloudvolumes/writable_templates. During writable volume creation the Appvolumse manager checks this folder to see which templates it can use to create the writable volume.

Old writable volumes might not be 100% supported in newer versions. Still, this would be the quickest way of doing this. Other option might be to check the snapvol.cfg file on the Profile + UIA template and to remove all settings related to the UIA and keep the profile only settings. I wouldn't suggest this though..
