thanks, but there is a simulation environment in the VM that i need and cannot load myself (it isn't available that way). The VM comes with no support, but this is almost certainly a VMWare problem, since i can duplicate it with any GUI-based VM.

as the subject line indicates, VMs with a gui have trouble with the mouse.

Dell XPS 15 9510

32G RAM, Intel processor - i can't keep all of the variants straight and am not at the pc now.

host OS: Win11 with all updates as of 6/12/2022.

guest OS: Ubuntu 20.04 in an ova file [non-gui ubuntu 20 vms work fine]

the system has 2 thunderbolt ports and a usb3 port

i have tried 3 mice, one bluetooth and two basic MS 3 button USB mice

i have uninstalled and reinstalled vmware and toggled every option that i thought might help.

hard to summarize the troubleshooting i've done but the problem presents as either no mouse cursor at all or a mouse cursor pegged to the bottom right corner of the virtual screen. ctl-g changes nothing, ctl-alt returns mouse to host os.

any help will be appreciated

> guest OS: Ubuntu 20.04 in an ova file

That makes no sense - you cant run a VM from an OVA-archive.
Explain better - especially explain wether your guestOS has VMware-tools installed or not ...

thanks. I misspoke: I imported an ova.

The vm boots straight to the gui - no login is required, and no option to do otherwise is offered.. Networking is not fully configured so I cannot ssh, I have been unable to find an option to open a console window, as is available esxi.

Given that I cannot use the mouse in the interface (gnome, i believe), thus cannot open a terminal, I cannot install VMware tools.

Nor can I tab among the icons as none can be selected from which to begin tabbing.

Was the OVA prepared by the Maquis de Sade or is there a chance to find some instructions ?
Can you use the keyboard to kill the gnome-UI.
Do you use a gaming mouse ? - try the cheapest mouse you can find and connect it to a usb2 port.
Can you try network when connecting to a vmnet that offers DHCP ?

It may actually be easier to just download the Ubuntu ISO and install it yourself... I did that a couple weeks ago and it was painless and fairly quick. And have zero issues - Workstation 16.1.2 on Win 10 host.

Well, the ova came from an Italian University, so it's more likely the Medicis are involved than de Sade.

I've tried 3 mice: logitec 3 button USB

microsoft 3 button USB (it was $9, can't get much cheaper)

microsoft bluetooth

same results with them all.

I'll see what i can do to get networking going, but this is not the only GUI-based VM this has happened with, The others were a while ago and had slipped my mind. Getting feebleminded, I guess. Or maybe frustrated that almost 60 year old technology (mice) isn't fully supported.

Pardon my ignorance, but what key sequence should kill the gui? I almost never use Linux with a GUI so I am unfamiliar (and unimpressed) with Gnome.

You should be able to get to Terminal with Ctrl-Alt-T keyboard shortcut. You could also try removing and re-adding the USB controller in the VM settings.

What is the output of lsusb -tv ? This is an output of an Ubuntu 22.04 VM.

Got interrupted and couldn't get to this for a while.

I'm giving up on VmWare - if i have to troubleshoot something as commonplace as the mouse i can't trust it.
