I am trying to power on a VM that was prepared in VMWare Workstation version 9.x and I have moved it to a Workstation 16 Pro environment.

When I try to start the VM I get the error message "The device "sata" is not supported by the current hwversion". I went into the VM settings and deleted the reference to the SATA device which was a CD-ROM. Even though I don't see any devices labeled "sata" I still can't power on the VM.

Any advice?

I figured out what the problem was. I clicked on "Upgrade this virtual machine" and it opened the hardware compatibility wizard. Not sure why the Workstation 9.x was selected but it stated that No SATA devices were compatible even though the VM clone came with SATA devices in its settings.

I changed the hardware compatibility to Workstation 14.x and I was able to boot the VM.
