Audio for VMs

Greetings,

We, (Community College), are currently using VMware workstation and VC for deployment of VMs.

Does anyone else consider the lack of audio capabilities a significant issue when using other than workstation VMs? I don't mean high-end audio for Gamers' but just standard on board audio for Presentations.

Hi Pete, welcome to the forums.

Audio does work in View. It supports multimedia (MMR) and RDP by itself does sound redirection. You should not have any problems with basic audio for presentations.

Something to keep in mind is that unless you are using the View Client on a Windows PC your thin client solution will also need to support MMR or the VM View client built-in will need to make use of the MMR that is designed into the agent. I've had different levels of success with clients.

For example, iGel does not support audio redirection, at least the resellers I am working with have no solution for me yet. The PanoLogic devices have decent audio redirection using their 2.5 DAS, but the sound is highly compressed. Wyse technology is what was licensed by VMware and performs the best of the three however it's not going to work in EVERY situation.

You need to look at what kind of audio you wish to redirect and then determine if the client extensions work for that audio. Native RDP audio redirection may work for you but that will be heavily network dependent.

I've tested audio and video conferencing based on MS Communicator 2007/OCS 2007/WinXP without any problems.

Audio/Video-presention worked well too.

Wyse has their TCX software, which is licensed separately from the Thin Client itself. One version of the TCX software is for USB Redirection and the other for Multi-media. As a previous post stated, the TCX software was implemented by VMware, however this only is the case when using the View Client on a re-purposed physical client desktop

The TCX software, running from the Wyse Thin Client, will provide an enhanced multi-media experience when connecting to a Virtual Desktop over RDP
