I am getting ready to purchase the VMware View (enterprise or premier) starter kit package with 10 desktop VMs. I want to start with this version for the proof of concept but I am a little fussy about how the Windows Desktop licensing works. I am thinking of doing Windows 7 as my primary desktop for replication. Can someone advise me how do you or what do I need to make sure that my VM Desktop are legal to use in production. I read different information but little confuse. Please advise.

Thank you.

Collin

That depends on what type of clients you are using.

If you have Windows clients with SA (software assurance) then you don't need anything extra to use VDI. If you are using thin clients or OEM licensed desktops, you need Windows VDA (Windows Virtual Desktop access). Windows VDA is a device-based subscription license and will be available at $100/device/year.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/enterprise/solutions/virtualization/operating-system/

Sven Huisman

VMware vExpert 2009/2010

Virtualfuture.info

Twitter @svenh
