Prerequisite is because multiple components relied on the dns only.

e.g. SSO will not work if the dns not setup correctly.

User authantication will raise problems.

domain join will not work.

mks problem will raise frequently.

Enterprise will work on AD authentication and AD depends on DNS and dns works when fqdn is correct.

And so much on.

thats why its in to prerquisite for creating a fqdn for your vcenter and hosts as well.

We would like to install vcenter, but the documentation mentions DNS has to be setup correctly first. We have not setup any DNS, and vsphere and vshpere client work fine.

In simple terms, what exactly do we need to setup?

Thanks.

Hi, thanks for sending the link , but the reason I posted this question is because the information on that link does not make sense.

According to the documentation, it is a prerequisite, not a optional feature. Also, it doesnt stat what needs to have a FQN. The link you sent implies that only the vcenter appliance needs to have the FQN resolvable, but I have seen other posts saying that the vsphere server needs to have a fqn and it needs to have a reverse lookup also (which is not stated in this link)?

The link states that the FQN is optional, in which case why is listed in pre-requisites, and why does everyone say if its not setup, it wont work?
