Hi All,

Recently i seen a windows server 2008 R2 machine in my environment with having 4 socket with 4 core each (Means 16 Cpu).

I can also see them in device manager of windows host. Now i am confused as the server 2008 R2 Std. version support till 4 CPU only.

Are they going to work with that. or There will be change in physical or Virtual cpu architecutre and supported no of CPU from windows.

If i missed anything to supply here. please let me know.

Attaching screenshot.

Thanks

Anjani Kumar

Okay. i studied this . Just want to recheck if this configuration which i attached in screenshot is going to work. ??

Means 4 Cores x 4 socket.= 16 cpu. if yes. Than why its showing 4 processor in Brackets in windows properties page. (What i am assuming its simply highlighting that this vm has more cpu than it can be supported.)

Thanks.

Because this is what is most likely assigned at the virtual layer; if you Right click>Edit settings on the VM and go to the CPU's you will most likely see 4 virtual sockets, and 4 cores per socket.

So long as you do not go above 4 sockets the configuration should be supported.

The value showing in brackets are the number of sockets (not the logical processors), because of this you see only 4.

If you have some doubt if VM is using all logical processors, just open the Task Manager and check the Performance tab, and you will see 16 processors.
