Single VDS - Most simple manage environment. If your environment don’t have to have multiple configuration, you can choice this way.

Multiple VDS - Reverse with Single case. If you would like to have different settings VDSs, this way should be selected.

Hi everyone,

Just want to know what you think of segregating traffic types into different vDS. We have a situation where we have 5 vDS for each of the following.

MGMT, backup. NFS

vMotion

vSAN

NSX vTEP

NSX Edges

Note. We are using VLAN IDs for each type of these traffic types.

My manager thinks that we should have either one vDS or two at most. I tried to find any docs or articles from VMware explaining the use cases for how many vDS should you have but I couldn't find anything that can help me to decide.

Please share your thoughts on this and any helpful resources. Much appreciated.

Which NIC port uplinks would you want to use for the various traffic types and their VLANs?
