ESXi 6.0 3620759 (u2)

VM template win2012 r2 hw version 10

I often clone this template to use obtain identical VM copies to use for training purposes.

Today a bad surprise: the win2012 VM doesn't start anymore but gets the error: YOUR PC RAN INTO A PROBLEM AND NEEDS TO RESTART, then the blue screen to CHOOSE AN OPTION.

Since I did not change anything inside the guest or inside the host I really do not understand why I ran into this problem.

I made some research founding KB 2092807 but upgrading to HW11 and adding monitor_control.enable_softResetClearTSC = True

Doesen't solve my issue.

Please, any idea?

It honestly sounds like some application/driver installed on the Guest OS is not being handled properly. When you boot into safe mode you are essentially stripping the VM down to the basic OS. I'd recommend checking Event Viewer to see if there is an Application event that might lead in a better direction.

Otherwise, you can try Startup management in task manager to stop a few services from startup and see if you can narrow down the appliaction/service.

On a side note, was anything recently updated/patched/changed on these virtual machines that could be a common denominator?

Hi and thanks for your help

I assure you that is not anna pplication or driver problem. The guest has not been moified since 12 months and the problem is born just some days ago.

The flow is:

I have VMA: a win2012r2 VM

I clone it and it I create VMB than do not boot correctly

I boot VMB in safe mode

I shutdown VMB

I boot VMB and it works!

then I tried to:

boot VMA and it do not boot correctly

I boot VMA in safe mode

I shutdown VMA

I boot VMA and it works

I shutdown VMA

I clone VMA and it I create VMC than do not boot correctly

It's really strange

SOLVED.

The original VM has the following parameters added in the VMX

hypervisor.cpuid.v0 = "FALSE"

mce.enable = "TRUE“

vhv.enable = "TRUE“

Then it was exported in an OVF file and imported using an old .exe vsphere client.

The 3 parameters disappeared and the problem arise.
