LSI Drivers and XP - Now impossible ?

I've spent a few ( ok lots of ) hours trying to get the LSI Drivers to work with an XP install, and I think I've read every post on the subject going back 18 months.

- Trying the latest drivers from LSI

-- Following the instruction exactly in the zip file, copying just the list of files required to a clean floppy

-- Boot XP ( SP3 ) install, F6, Specify drivers.

-- Driver is listed, install continues.

-- Cannot find any hard drives.

- Trying older drivers from LSI, including all the .flp images other people have built

-- Gets further than above, past formatting

-- Then cannot copy symmpi.sys

-- I have tried putting copies of all the files in \i386 on the floppy as well as suggested somewhere, this also doesn't work.

I have a couple of questions.

- Is it actually possible to install LSI drivers on ESX 3.5 and XP SP3 ? If so which exact drivers and where exactly do they need to live ?

- Does it matter ? I can only find an LSI/Buslogic comparison of 2000/2003

After I posted this I decided to just go ahead and use the buslogic drivers, and they wouldn't install either - with the cannot copy file problem.

Going back to an earlier XP image the older LSI drivers now install.

However the latest LSI drivers still don't find any hard drives.

I may have another go at Slipstreaming an SP3 but for the moment it seems that SP3 has problems, at least for me.

I'm having this exact same problem where setup says "Setup cannot copy the file symmpi.sys"

I'm using Windows XP SP2 if it matters, which it shouldn't. I'm using this driver:

I am having this issue on ESXi 3.5, neither bus logic or lsi logic drivers find a drive during the XP install. I have tried both SP2 and SP3 with no luck. I am going to continue looking into a solution.

If it helps, I was using a Windows XP SP2 cd.

I'm having a similar problem as described above. I've tried installing Windows XP SP2 using both the LSI controller with driver flp and the Buslogic with corresponding flp.

In both cases, with proper driver and controller selected, I get the problem where, after formatting the hard drive (so it does see the hard drive controller), the system cannot copy the controller drivers from the virtual floppy disk.

A situation akin to this has happened to me in the past with a physical server install; basically, it involved a need to provide a floppy disk with storage controller drivers, except, for some reason, the USB drivers used to read from the floppy were unloaded when it got to the point where it came to copy the files to the hard drive. This was solved by using an alternative usb floppy drive. Something similar may be happening here as well, except we are tied to the virtual floppy disk implementation provided by the Infrastructure Client.

Does no one else have this problem?

I'm using VMware ESXi 3.5 and installing through the VMware Infrastructure Client.

Having scrounged up a SP3 CD from a friend (the good kind that do favors at 10:30 pm), the installation process works with the Buslogic controller and driver flp. Something in the SP2 installer has some kind of problem with the floppy drive.

At the end of the day, either VMware has to fix this in their virtual floppy drive (if this is actually the problem) or you have to find a SP1, SP0, or SP3 Windows XP disk and use your key with one of those install discs.

Hopefully this helps somebody out there.

this worked for me finally, i was having the exact same issue using a windows xp cd that had been slipstreamed with sp3. went back and tried a windows xp sp2 install cd and it worked flawlessly.

Found this posting and used the BusLogic driver and the VMware supplied scsi .flp driver.

Installed with XP SP3.

See the note towards the bottom regarding using BusLogic.

I have tried it and many of my customers had successfuly been able to follow through it and successfully get XP up and running in no time on VMware ESX.
