I recently recieved a free license for ESX 3.x through a VMware give-away. However, when I place the guests in the Automatic Startup section, they do not automatically start or shut down when the host reboots. I looked through the system logs on the host and found this:

What licensing is required for a single host to have autoPowerOn enabled?

There are several of us on these forums having this problem. Most (myself included) found that autostart worked fine in the demo version but as soon as a purchased ESXi 3.5 serial # was input, autostart failed to work anymore. Appears to be a bug that hasn't been fixed in the last couple of patches.

Heh, be thankful you didn't pony up any cash for your version. Those of us who did (or who recommended it to our bosses after the demo worked FINE) are pretty disgruntled.

Kind of in the same situation here. I've suggested upgrading from VMServer to VMware ESX to my boss, but he wont sign off on it until autostart works.

What command(s) does the the Start button on the VMware Infrastructure interface use to start the virtual machines?

i can't use vmware-cmd because i get the following:

There is a licensing bug. You should contact you sales rep and mention PR 269075.

Please call VMware support. This is a known issue with the serial numbers and they will be able to enable you until we resolve the issue. Thank you for your patience.

Has anyone tried reverting back to the pre Update 1 version of 3.5? I have to assume that this is relatively recent issue. (Not that April is that recent)

I called support and mentioned "PR 269075" and I was told to wait until July 18 when a patch would be released to fix this problem. Has a patch been released to fix this issue yet as the Update Manager doesn't show any new updates? To bypass this we had to set the license to evaluation mode so we can use the autostart feature.

ESXi 3.5 Update 2 is scheduled to be released on the 28th. Perhaps they were referring to that.

This bug has been resolved in U2, I thought support would have a workaround for you.

I called support somewhere between July 8-10 right after I searched the forums and found this post. I was surprised support told me to just wait it out. I repeatly told her that on the forums there was a method to correct or bypass the problem. They tried to connect me to tech support and after the call didn't go through after about 8 times, she tried again and I was disconnected. I figured I'd just leave it in eval mode as we had plenty of time to wait until July 18.

I just read the news about ESXi, and how it will be free. I purchased it from the VMware store last month so I see I can get a rebate, but will this update on July 28 convert our paid version to the free version or how will that work?
