Cannot create Resource pool in HA Cluster

I've created an HA Cluster in our development environment, all looks good though I haven't had time to test all the failure scenarios yet.

One thing i did notice is that I cannot create a resource pool within my new HA cluster. Is that because you need DRS enabled in order to create a resource pool in a cluster??

I can't seem to find anything definitive out there, though a few VMWare documents point in that general direction with out actually saying so

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Yes you are correct - you must enable DRS on your cluster before you can create a resource pool within the cluster.

There is nothing that should stop you form creating a Resource Pool under an HA Cluster - what error do you get when you try to add the resource pool?

java_cat33 is correct. Without DRS, you can only create pools individually in the ESX hosts, not on a cluster, until the resources have been aggregated with DRS.

That is true - did not think through the question - without DRS there is no pool of resources to draw form - but I am wondering if you could still create a resource pool on the ESX host?

Hi all

Thanks for the responses. I thought this was the obvious answer, just wanted to bounce the idea of someone else first.

Can't create resource pools at any level within the cluster, the option is totally greyed out in the right click menu.

That's OK though, I can use it as an arguement towards buying DRS licences. I told them that there was no point just implementing HA you might as well go for the whole lot

Thanks again guys

In vSphere4, it is the same situation, you must enable DRS in order to create Resource Pool, otherwise that option is greyed out.

Hi,

I've just installed vCenter 4.1 Update-1 and created a brand new Data Center and Cluster and enabled both HA and DRS on the cluster, but the new resource pool option is greyed out. There are no ESX hosts yet in the cluster. Do I need to add an ESX host in the cluster in order to create resource pools?

Regards,

George.
